An indigo dye artisan, Takayuki was born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
He owns a workshop in the mountainous area of Kanagawa Prefecture, where he runs an indigo dyeing company called Awonoyoh where they focus on using traditional techniques and natural materials.

He started contemplating a more sustainable life after the nuclear power plant accident after the Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011 and immediately thought of indigo dyeing. Polluted water used in chemical dyeing flows through the rivers to the sea and destroys the natural ecosystem, however, the indigo dye that he uses is regenerative and the waste materials and water from his process can become fertilizer for the land or food for the fish.

He began studying indigo dyeing at a workshop in Tokyo and from there continued to travel all across Japan participating in a wide range of indigo dye workshops. He acquired a wealth of knowledge and techniques and has mastered all the processes within traditional Japanese textile dyeing, including spinning yarn, making fabric, katazome, shibori, tsutsugaki and batik.

Currently there are only six artisans who produce the raw material for indigo dye (sukumo) in Japan. The aging of the Japanese population has made it even more difficult to obtain sukumo every year which is a considerable problem for the Japanese textile industry. Takayuki grows the indigo plants and produces sukumo by himself to preserve the traditional method of indigo dyeing. He passes on his knowledge to many people and works hard to preserve the traditional way of Japanese textile dyeing.
